New Delhi: India’s Ayush services sector has emerged as one of the country’s fastest-growing service segments, with its economic contribution estimated at US$36.92 billion in FY2024-25, according to a new study by the Research and Information System for Developing Countries (RIS). The study projects the sector could expand to between US$216 billion and US$318 billion by 2047, potentially making it a significant contributor to the Viksit Bharat @2047 vision.
The report was formally released during the 11th Ayurveda Day celebrations in Nagpur on September 23. It is based on a nationally scaled, establishment-level survey of 15,914 establishments covering all six Ayush systems — the first such measurement of the sector’s economic contribution.
Key findings:
- The sector recorded a 16.91% compound annual growth rate (CAGR) between FY2022-23 and FY2024-25
- It directly supports around 1.76 million livelihoods, with women forming 43% of the workforce
- It generated an estimated US$1.77 billion in Medical Value Travel revenue in 2024-25
- Clinics and day-care centres drove over 71% of revenue, with Ayurveda alone accounting for nearly 48% of the total
Union Ayush Minister Prataprao Jadhav said the findings underlined the sector’s growing economic potential: “The findings of this landmark study affirm that Ayush is not merely a cultural inheritance but a dynamic and high-growth engine of India’s economy. The Ayush sector is poised to play an increasingly important role in healthcare, wellness, employment and global economic engagement, while contributing to our vision of a healthy and self-reliant India”
Ayush Secretary Vaidya Rajesh Kotecha said the study created an evidence base for future policy and investment, while RIS Director General Professor Sachin Kumar Sharma noted it marks an important step in building an evidence-based understanding of the Ayush services economy.
The study suggests that stronger quality standards, digital adoption, and global outreach could lift the sector to the upper end of its 2047 projection, reinforcing Ayush’s role in services-led economic growth.
